Grover's Flute

I often feel like this. You just don't understand a certain group's customs and you think they're picking on you, but it's just their way.

Sound of Ceres Autumn Observatory Tour

My band, Sound of Ceres, is about to do a little tour. I've really been enjoying this project. I've never really enjoyed doing music live. I love working on music in the studio but playing live has never been fun for me. I'm not really a very talented musician, I mostly consider myself a song writer and sound maker. So, performing "live" has always seemed like I'm walking on a tight rope ("can he do it?").

However performing live visuals really suits me. Maybe because I come from a puppetry background. It feels like infinite possibilities and experimentation... there are no "wrong" notes. The photos below are from our show last month at Webster Hall opening for Peter Bjorn & John. Since then I've moved away from liquid light and more towards lasers, holograms, fiber optics and other forms of light magic. If we're playing near you please come by, see the show and say hi!

National Geographic - The Invisible World (1979) Crystallization Process Close Up

This close up film of the crystallization process is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. I mean, this is a real film of a physical process. Not an animation!

The whole film is pretty amazing, but it does have some scary moments (there are as many creatures living on your body as there are people on earth!).

The Creatures of Yes review Till We Have Faces by C.S. Lewis

I worked on this video for a pretty long time. By the end I was like "is this even good!?". But I'm pretty happy with it. The Creators Project gave us a nice write up about it:

Check it out and let me know what you think. Would C.S. Lewis have been happy with this review?

Little Things

Gosh, this is the longest I've gone without posting since the very beginning. Sorry readers, if you're still out there. So much going on in my life, it makes me wonder if this blog was filling some void for all those years.

R.I.P. Isao Tomita

I found some of his records at a thrift store when I was a kid and have been a fan ever since. There's some special sort of magic in his music. Sad to see him go.

Creatures of Yes - Tom

I was a little ambivalent about putting out such a stripped down episode of Creatures of Yes. But then I thought maybe it was a nice breather and a little contrast to the rest of the videos in the series. I think it's also a nice introduction to Tom, who we would need a little one on one time with to really get to know him. Most of the other characters get in there naturally, but he's a bit more reserved.

Time in a Bottle

Well, gosh! I don't remember seeing this as a kid on the Muppet Show. Maybe it wouldn't resonate so much with a little kid, but watching it now in middle age - I think it's possibly the most brilliant thing I've ever seen Jim Henson do. It's super sad and kind of funny at the same time. And I love all the technical elements - stirring actual liquids, then drinking them! The whole set is so intricate and kinetic. Love it.

Also - sorry about so many videos these days! Every post is a video! I wonder if it has anything to do with my journey into the world of video production? Probably. Anyway, I'll try to at least write something in each post.

This song is incredible! I guess I've heard it before, but... I don't know. I love it.

Can It Be?.... An RS-09?

I was listening to the soundtrack today for Full Circle when I thought I heard a Roland RS-09. What do you think?

The string sound that comes in around 2:35. The way the envelope cuts off the previous note when it goes to a new one. I think it's an RS-09.

A few years ago I had a similar revelation while listening to a North of Cornwallis song. I asked Lester if it was in fact an RS-09 and he confirmed it was! I don't even remember what NOC song it was, but they are a terrific band, lest ye forget:

Well, gosh now that I am listening to this song. Check out the lead at 2:18. Must be an RS-09. It must.

Why do I even care?

Kids being weird is always funny. Don't they all seem too tall or something? And is that the Ghostbox logo on the floor?

I am obsessed with lumia right now. It seems to be one of the more esoteric lighting techniques. I'm getting involved as best I can, for now!

I took my laser to a bunch of junk stores around the neighborhood a couple weeks ago and tried shining it through all different kinds of glass till I found the effect I was looking for (people probably thought I was very odd indeed!). I found some dinner glasses from the '70s that did great things - very ripple-y. I'm using them on the tours I'm doing with my new band Sound of Ceres. And on our next tour (May) we'll be exploring caves throughout the midwest. What could be better?!

The Beast Shouted Love by Beautify Junkyards

Best new music I've heard in a while!

Miś Coralgol

When I was a kid I didn't have any interest in stop motion animation... and I'm still not crazy about the clay stuff. But I get really excited these days when I see something like this! It's so detailed and gloriously textured. I'd love to do it myself, but I think it would take a lot more time and money than I have right now. Future goals!

This show might be life changing. It is perfect! See:

Making a Roland MC-8 Cable

This is just a congratulatory post to by best buddy David. A couple years ago he made an outrageous post on his blog about making a new connector cable for the Roland MC-8 from scratch. Check that out here:

Recently his hard work has been recognized by the "official" (in our hearts) Roland MC-8 blog. Here:

Congrats David, you are a genius. But I've always know that!

Roland's 8th Annual Synthesizer Tape Contest

You may remember this post from ye olden days:

Well, we have a wonderful update! A person by the name of Syzygy has made the 8th Synthesizer Tape Contest recordings available for us:

I think this was 1983. Enjoy!

Cosmic Clock

Gosh, I've really let time get away from me. This is the most I've neglected this blog since it began. I've been super busy lately and some big things have happened in my life. The life behind the blog. The face of the faceless voice.

I got married and I started this project: (listed in order of importance).
